Engineering Disciplines Explained

This article gives you a high level overview about the various engineering disciplines. Engineering is a broad term and encompasses various definitions, contexts, and semantics. But in general, it is the art, theory, and practical application of engineering theory to arrive at technological solutions to solve problems.

Civil Engineering

Civil engineering deals with the conceptualization, design, construction, and maintenance of physically and naturally constructed structures. It is also the manipulation of such structures through the application of civil engineering principles. Civil engineering is an old discipline, and the oldest among the newer crop of engineering disciplines.

Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineering is probably among the most complex of engineering disciplines considering that it deals with the study and application of electricity. This study and application pervades to other related disciplines such as electronics and telecommunications. Electronic engineering is often a subset of electrical engineering, and electrical engineers are expected to know both the subjects.

Structural Engineering

Structural engineering is closely related to civil engineering. You can say that principles of structural engineering are derived from civil engineering. Structural engineering is however more specialized and deals with the analysis of structures that have or resist loads. A combination of structural and civil engineering is ideal to have to build quality structures that resist natural and man made disasters.

Electronic Engineering

Electronic engineering is a dynamic discipline dealing with the application of electricity to build electrical components. Electronic engineering is a vast field with infinite scope for new inventions. Given that electricity possesses infinite potential to solve problems of humanity; electronic engineering harnesses the power of electricity to build electronic components that are used in every aspect of our life.

Engineering Qualifications and Certification

To be admitted to undergraduate engineering courses, you take SAT exams - results of which are used for admission. See if the program(s) you enroll for are accredited. For more information read the EAS Guide to Undergraduate Study in the US. After the undegraduate program, you are eligible to the graduate program in engineering.

Under two year engineering programs, you get the Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.). You take these courses at community colleges. After this, you are eligible to apply for graduate engineering program.

Engineering Education

In the U.S., engineering is among the largest professions. International students pursue engineering education in the U.S. given the ample industry-backed cutting edge research and development infrastructure for engineering students.

To be a good engineer you need to be naturally good in science and math. Even if you are not, you can acquire a liking for it. You have to be highly analytical, methodological and practical. You should possess the powers of macro and micro thinking to solve problems. Engineers are needed at every era in the world’s history. As an engineer, you are helping build the future of humankind
